In French. Postally used, undivided back. Chromo-Litho, in multi colors. Mailed during the Dreyfus Affaire. Mailed to the Comtesse Eleonore de Beaufort at Naples and Rome luxury hotels. They were mailed January 3 though January 23, 1901., with Italians postage stamps. The caricatures are by teh very talented artist Vincenzo Nasi signed his work as "Enzo". Van Dock du Enzo. THe illustrations are in the Art Nouveau stile (Jgemdsto;e). The Dreyfus Affair began when a bordereau (detailed memorandum) offering to procure French military secrets was recovered by French agents from the waste paper basket of Maximilian Von Schwartzkoppen, the military attaché at the German Embassy in Paris. Though the handwriting of the memorandum was clearly that of Esterhazy, who was heavily in debt and expressed hatred for France, Alfred Dreyfus, a fervent French patriot, a rich man, and a Jew, was labeled as the traitor. Lieutenant-colonel Hubert-Joseph Henry (2 June 1846 Pogny, Marne, France - 31 August 1898 Fort Mont-Valérien, Paris, France), a close friend of the traitor Esterhazy, forged a second document in order to help cast blame on Dreyfus. Henry ultimately confessed, was arrested for forging evidence against Dreyfus and slit his own throat in prison. These cards are pro Dreyfus, created before the third trial in 1906 in which Dreyfus was exonerated.
