Tinted lithograph. Image measures 6 1/4" x 14 1/4" Sheet measures 7 1/8" x 15 1/4". This charming lithograph, made for D.T. Valentine's "Manual of the Common Council of the City of New York" from 1864, depicts Bethesda Terrace in Central Park as it appeared in the mid-19th century. The print provides a pleasantly composed view of New Yorkers enjoying a lovely day in the park, with the fountain in full flow at the image's center. Below the image, Calvert Vaux is cited as the architect of the terrace, along with his assistant, Jacob W. Mould. The print is in very good condition. Foxing and tearing at original fold lines. D.T. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and began publishing the Manuals in 1841. The Manuals were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York, richly illustrated with maps, lithographs, and engravings. This print of Central Park is a lovely example of historic New York. Toning to edges and tear to left fold line.
