Hayes accompanied Elisha Kent Kane on the Second Grinnell Expedition, acting as Surgeon. Here he presents a brief outline of that journey, together with an account of a four-month journey in 1854 with a party that set out from the expedition's winter quarters (Rensselaer Harbour) towards Upernavik and back by boat and sledge along Smith Sound and the west coast of Greenland. He also comments on physical features, botany, hunting and Eskimos of the region. Isaac Israel Hayes (1832-1881) was an American Arctic explorer, physician, and politician. During the American Civil War, he was appointed the commanding officer at Satterlee General Hospital. Following the war, he was elected to the New York State Assembly. Hayes completed three Arctic expeditions and received several gold medals for his achievements from the Société de Géographie in Paris and the Royal Geographical Society in London.
