CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Full history of this famous military academy from its founding in 1783 to 1892. Now known as The Citadel, the author of this work was its 6th Superintendent. During the Civil War, Thomas was in command of the State’s Cadets and organized them into a fighting force. They successfully defended a critical section of rail line against a Federal force of 5,000 at the Battle of Tulifinny allowing more than 100,000 Confederate troops to escape the advancing army under Sherman.
