This collection, commissioned by Folio, presents the best of Jefferson's writings: political correspondence with George Washington, private letters to his wife and his lover and documents that express his views on everything from America's future, the nature of democracy and slavery. In 1825, a year before his death, Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Revolutionary War hero Henry Lee to explain his purpose in drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776. 'It was intended to be an expression of the American mind, and to give to that expression the proper tone and spirit called for by the occasion.'
