Peter’s Letters to his Kinsfolk. The Third Edition. Printed in Edinburgh by William Blackwood. 1819, 3 volumes, 8.75” x 5.5”, 8vo, hardcover 3/4 leather. Overall good, with superficial rubbing and wear to exterior, primarily along edges and corners. Some cracking and wear to hignes particularly the front hinge of Volume I. Text blocks remain bound well. Bookplates on front pastedowns of each. Includes a variety of black-and-white sketches throughout, along with light markings and marginalia. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce piece by John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854), best known for his biography of his father-in-law, Walter Scott. A controversial piece, this set was anonymously written by Lockhart and satirized many of the influential men of Edinburgh at the time. Bookplate from Henry Cabot Lodge (1850-1924), a Republican senator from Massachusetts best known for his foreign policy stances, namely his successful lobbying to prevent American entry into the League of Nations.
