Shaka Zulu (1787-1828) was one of the most renowned leaders of the Zulu people. Known especially for his military innovations, he was responsible for turning the Zulu warriors into an efficient fighting force that allowed the Zulu empire to grow. This account of Shaka Zulu by Mazisi Kunene, originally written in Zulu and translated into English, brings together oral history of Emperor Shaka. Kunene was a well-respected authority on Zulu literary traditions, having written his dissertation on Zulu literature, and taught at various academic institutions, including UCLA and Stanford. This book was included as part of the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works African Authors Series. This copy is the rarer hardcover edition. It is in near fine condition with a dust jacket also in near fine condition. There is a very small tear to the bottom front of the dust jacket. A UNESCO sticker on the publication information page is visible through the paper on the title page. There are also small pencil marks and a small stain on the edges of the pages, but otherwise the book is without blemish. A fascinating biography of a renowned figure of South African history.
