Typhoon And Other Stories (Amy Foster, Falk: A Reminscence, TO-MORROW) (First Edition - First Impression) Joseph Conrad Antiquarian,First Editions,Literature
First impression of the true first edition with all the correct issue points (as detailed below). Limited to 1,500 copies with the publisher's windmill device on the title page, and without "Reserved for Colonies" on the verso of the title page (which would indicate a later issue). The verso of title-page correctly reads: 'This edition enjoys Copyright in all Countries signatory to the Berne Treaty, and is not to be imported into the United States of America.' ***This first impression correctly has the two-pages of reviews to "The Nigger of Narcissus" to the fore, and the thirty-two page publisher's catalogue to the rear, and has the publisher's blind-stamped device to bottom corner of rear board (as called for). This UK first edition includes Joseph Conrad's final revisions to "Typhoon," which do not appear in the American first edition of 1902 (The novella "Typhoon" was published previously in America in 1902 by Putnam), therefore this first impression of the first UK edition is also a first edition thus, incorporating Conrad's final revisions to Typhoon. ***This UK first impression of the first edition is the correct Cagle's binding "B" (only two or three copies of binding "A" are know to exist). This copy has the fore-edge and the bottom edge of the text-block rough-cut, with the top edge of the text-block trimmed (as called for). Also it has the correct spacing of 10 mm as measured between "Conrad" and "Heinemann" on the spine of the boards as mentioned in Cagle A8b(1). ***Very good in dark slate-grey cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and gilt titles in a life-buoy design entitled S.S. Nan-Shan to the front board. Fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block rough-cut (as called for). ***Please note that there is a red ink mark running along the front edge of the spine of the boards, and to the bottom of the front pastedown, and at the very bottom of the first few pages. ***Contemporaneous owner's name and date in black fountain pen ink to front free endpaper: 'de Blaquiere III, 1903'. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Bottom corner of rear board slightly creased. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and creased. Offsetting to front and rear free endpapers. No foxing to pages. Pages clean. Slight reading lean to the binding but spine tight. ***196mm x 138mm. viii prelim pages including the two-page adverts for the Nigger of Narcissus and the half-title page, plus 304 text-pages and 32-pages of publisher's adverts to rear. The fore-edge of three of the catalogue pages to the rear are uncut (can be carefully cut open). ***The short stories are all nautical, based on Conrad's experience in the merchant navy. Typhoon is the story of a ship captain who struggles against nature. Joseph Conrad, who was an exile from Poland writes about the themes of migration and isolation, particularly in "Amy Foster" and "To-morrow." "Amy Foster" tells the story of an emigrated Polish woman coming to terms with living in England. "To-morrow" tells of the coming home of an elderly sailor's long-lost son. "Falk" is a story about a tug-boat master. His dark secret stops him from courting the woman with whom he is in love. ***The story "Typhoon" was originally published in a separate edition in the United States in 1902, but there was no English equivalent until 1912, making this its first appearance in book-form in England. ***First impression of the UK first edition, in very good condition, in its original cloth-covered boards. This first impression of the first edition of "Typhoon and Other Stories" is the true first publication in book-form of all the stories. Uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
