Tang Shenwei was an 11th century physician and author of the seminal medical text, Zhenglei bencao. The text produced in facsimile here is a later, expanded edition published in 1189 by Zhang Cunhui, which incorporates the Zhanglei bencao with Kou Zhongshi's Bencao yanyi. It covers the properties and usage of over 1,500 different medical components, with illustrations for many of them, and includes plants, animals, minerals, and "human objects" (blood, hair, etc.). The sources for the material come from both personal observations and prior texts, some of which have been lost in the original. The edition duplicated here was used in the imperial encyclopedia Siku quanshu and was an important medical reference for centuries.
