Fine. - Small quarto [approximately 8 inches high by 6 inches wide], softcover bound in tan wrappers printed in black with a vignette in black on the front cover & the Rose Valley Press logo on the rear wrap. 32 pages. Illustrated with 3 full-page black-and-white plates of Rose Valley furniture. A near fine, unopened copy. This is the first issue of "The Artsman", published by the Rose Valley Press, and includes an opening statement from the editors. Also included are "Rose Valley papers", essays on Rose Valley by each of the editors; and "Rose Valley scriptures", pieces by Peter Burrowes, , Hanford Henderson, Walt Whitman and John Ruskin. The Rose Valley Association was formed in July 1901, under the leadership of Wlll Price, to start an arts and crafts project. The association did not produce arts and crafts itself but rented out working space to craftsmen, provided them with housing and helped sell what they produced. Price's vision may have been modeled on the utopian socialist society described in "News from Nowhere" by William Morris. Rare.
