Three lined composition books with a total of approximately 225 pages filled with handwritten log entries, photographs, and ephemera recording the scouting adventures of Robert W. Schickling (1942-2018), Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 80, Boy Scouts of America Philadelphia Council, 1951-1954. Includes about 235 total b/w snapshots (some taped in, most corner-mounted) and two envelopes of negatives. All in very good condition. Two of the notebooks are "Log Books," recording numerous camping and hiking excursions made by Troop 80 (based in Northeast Philadelphia) in 1951-52 and 1954. Bob took his Patrol Leader duties seriously, recording for each trip the names of the boys participating, the time and location of meet-up, the place visited and activities engaged in, and time of departure. Excursion and camping locations included (among others) Pennypack Park, Franklin Field, Burholme Park, Willow Grove, Camp Hart (Musser Scout Reservation, Marlborough Township), Wissahickon, and Camp Melmar/Lorimer Park. In 1954, Troop 80 celebrated their 25th anniversary with a banquet. Bob notes that "On April 30, 1929, nine boys and their leaders organized Troop 80" and "since that time approximately 300 men and boys have passed through the troop." The same year, Bob attended the annual Camporee held by the Delaware District; the Order of the Arrow Weekend held at Treasure Island Scout Camp; and a special retreat for Catholic scouts . He also experienced "a real night of my life that I will never forget," attending the Fall Court of Honor at City Hall when he became an Eagle Scout. The third notebook is a scrapbook documenting Bob's trip (by train) to the BSA's Third National Jamboree, held at Irvine Ranch in Orange County, California, and attended by approximately 50,000 scouts and scout leaders. The book includes many photos and items of ephemera from the Jamboree, as well as postcards and photos from other parts of the cross-country trip.
