The book of hours was commissioned between 1325-1328 by King Charles IV for his wife, Jeanne d'Évreux, executed by Jean Pucelle in Paris. It only measures 90 x 60mm and contains 25 full-page miniatures in grisaille and countless drolleries. In 1401, the manuscript is listed in the inventory of the collection of Duc de Berry, the brother of Charles IV. The work is one of the most exquisite examples of early illuminated manuscripts. The miniatures are all executed in grisaille, a painting technique of grey tones with highlights of color for the faces and hands of the figures.
