An Interesting Event. [ A Wise/Forman Forgery ] Titmarsh, M.A. [= Thackeray, W.M.] Wise, T.J.

Contemporary red morocco by Zaehnsdorf (gilt pallet on front turn-in, their blind-stamped quality mark on rear pastedown), edges double-ruled in gilt, gilt dentelles, red silk endpapers, 8vo, 16 pp, padded with blank leaves at end. A 'creative forgery' by Thomas James Wise and/or Harry Buxton Forman who produced this pamphlet in or about 1890 from the text of Thackeray's short story which had first appeared in 'The Keepsake' in 1849. Carter & Pollard demonstrated in 'An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets' from the paper used and the type that the pamphlet could not have been manufactured in 1849 and they recount in detail the appearance of copies in the market from 1890 onwards. [Todd 408f]. Pencil notes on front free endpaper, early description (".this copy has been declared to be unique." pasted on a scrap of paper pasted to the flyleaf -though that perhaps relates to the Slater copy), red morocco by Zaehnsdorf (gilt pallet on front turn-in, their blind stamped quality mark on rear pastedown), gilt dentelles, red silk endpapers, without the plain pink wrappers found only on the J.H. Slater copy ("none of the copies in mint state that we have examined showed any trace of ever having had wrappers", Carter & Pollard 348), slight wear to head of front joint and upper foredge corner of front board, otherwise Near Fine.
