This is the 1791 Reissued edition, the first being published in 1786 but as two volumes. The first three parts on the whale fishery were published in one volume and the fourth part on the herring fishery were published in a separate volume. This 1791 edition is the first to be published with all four parts in one book. The author of the whaling manual is unknown. The names on the title page are those of engravers Dirk de Jong (active 1779-1805), Hendrik Kobell (1751-1779), and Matthias de Sallieth (1749-1791). A part from the practical aspects of whaling and herring fishing, it describes not only the seas where fishing occurred, but also the surrounding lands, the people that lived there, and the flora and fauna. One expert on Dutch whaling history, Joop Schokkenbroek, wonders whether the author's intention was to revive interest in the whaling industry, which, by the final years of the 18h century, was in steep decline. Some scholars attribute the work to Cornelius Gijsbertsz Zorgdrager (c. 1600 - after 1730), a whaling ship commander who published his travels and professional experience with whaling. Dutch whaling INCLUDING herring fishery. RAREE1791AQRX 04/24 - HK1425
