First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Eugen Spier - who served our cause with such devotion - from Violet Bonham Carter 1965". Both Bonham Carter and Spier were members of the Anti-Nazi Council, which from around 1935 to 1937 was the vehicle for Churchill's attempts to form a cross-party alliance against appeasement of the fascist dictatorships. Spier was a German businessman who settled in London. Bonham Carter contributed the introduction to Focus, his memoir of this period, published in 1963. Bonham Carter was Churchill's closest female friend. They first met in 1906 and remained close until Churchill's death in 1965. Her memoir covers Churchill's character and life until 1915.
