"According to the introduction, work on this geologic guide to Oaxaca began in 1929, when Mexico's expanding network of paved roads necessitated detailed knowledge of local geography. "It was also foreseen that Mexico would arouse interest among foreigners, who, having the ability to transport themselves at will in their own vehicles, would feel a growing desire to get to know our country, so abundant in legends and history, and would gladly seek the emotions typical of our regions and our semitropical climates, as a relief from the rigor of the high latitudes where they have their homes." The completed volume was authored by Tomas Barrera and published by the Geological Institute at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1946. Its 110+ pages offer an insightful look into the State of Oaxaca's geology, notably the suitability for road construction and the production capacity of local mines. Several references to indigenous ruins include a fold-out panoramic view of Mitla, an important Zapotec archaeological site. The book includes five folding maps with vibrant original color.
