Front and lower edges uncut, top edge gilt. During the reigns of Mohammad Shah (1834-48) and Louis-Philippe (1830-48), Persian and British relations deteriorated. Persia sought to build relations with the French to replace the provision of services formerly rendered by the British; Henry Boissier and other officers assigned under his command, including the author of this book, J.-P. Ferrier, were sent to Persia in 1839 to establish a permanent French military mission, providing weapons and training. Ferrier, a military instructor and an adjutant in Boissier's mission, extended his contract directly with the Persian government in 1846. He became adjutant-general of the Persian army, ultimately arousing envy and so ending in disgrace leaving Persia in 1851. Asia fascinated him and instead of returning to France, he faced adventurous journeys and explorations in which he was aided by the British.
