Formed in 1916 as D Company RTC, it and C Company were the first two units ever to engage in a tank battle [at Flers]. In WWII it was redesignated 4 RTR and served first with the BEF where it was virtually destroyed at Arras, and then at Tobruk where the battalion was lost.
