Ogden centered around a New York state law granting a twenty-year monopoly on steamboat navigation that gave rise to numerous legal challenges. Represented by Daniel Webster, Gibbons argued that the federal government had exclusive regulatory power over interstate commerce and that concurrent state regulation would only make the current patchwork of local policies more chaotic. The court agreed. The justices unanimously held that the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution granted the federal government power to regulate interstate commerce, including navigation.
