Contemporary Coverage of a Landmark Supreme Court Decision [United States Supreme Court]. [Gibbons v. Odgen]. Niles' Weekly Register. Third Series, No. 4, Vol. II. March 27, 1824. Baltimore: Edited and Published by H. Niles, 1824. 49-64 pp. Octavo (9-1/2" x 6-1/4"). Disbound, leaves separating but secure, moderate toning, light foxing to a few leaves. Housed in custom 10" x 6-3/4" cloth folding case, printed label to spine. $450. * Decided on March 2, 1824, Gibbons v. Ogden centered around a New York state law granting a twenty-year monopoly on steamboat navigation that gave rise to numerous legal challenges. Represented by Daniel Webster, Gibbons argued that the federal government had exclusive regulatory power over interstate commerce and that concurrent state regulation would only make the current patchwork of local policies more chaotic. The court agreed. The justices unanimously held that the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution granted the federal government power to regulate interstate commerce, including navigation. This issue of Niles' Weekly Register prints "the elaborate opinion.which involves some of the most important constitutional points."
