Central Park Guide. - Post Civil War Guide To Central Park. David Thomas Valentine

"This uncommon reference guide to New York City's Central Park was originally published in a c. 1869 edition of the Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York. The extensive volume outlining NYC politics, history, and demographics was edited by D.T. (David Thomas) Valentine from 1841 to 1870 and later re-issued in the 20th century. At the time of publication, the massive greenspace in the heart of Manhattan was less than two decades old, and construction on Vaux and Olmsted's masterful plan had only begun in 1858. Their grandiose design is reflected on the map, a rural repose accessible to the general public, with leisurely pathways laid amid pastures, woodlands, and natural landscapes. Fifty-seven different locations of interest and park features are numbered throughout the image and labeled below. Eighteen vestibules surround the park grounds, each with its own unique name like The Gate of All Saints, The Stranger's Gate, and The Farmer's Gate.
