This informative pocket map of Western Asia covers a broad area bounded approximately by the Persian Gulf, Caspian Sea, Sea of Marmara, and the Gulf of Suez. It was published in London in 1941 by George Philip & Son, Limited. Around the time the map was issued, the British troops were embroiled in the Syria–Lebanon campaign, also known as Operation Exporter. This expedition against Vichy French forces (colonial occupiers) was prompted by a coup d'état in Iraq just a few months earlier in which the pro-English regent was overthrown. Separate operations were undertaken to restore him to power, also in 1941. Both were ultimately successful. The map offers a detailed overview of the region, which would have been of great contemporary interest to a British audience. Transportation routes, settlements, and geographic features are labeled throughout. Other items of interest include oil pipelines, ancient ruins/historic sites, and seasonal landmarks.
