[Hawaii] [WWII] Vintage 1945 Hawaii Photo Album featuring World War 2 US Navy Sailor in uniform, Native Hawaiians, and various landscape shots. Album contains about 250 black and white silver gelatin photographs depicting Hawaii pre-statehood. Album measures 9.5" x 12.5" with photos measuring between 8" x 10" and 2.75" x 4.5" with most being 3.5" x 4.25". Nearly all photographs are labeled and identified with names or locations. Front of album is filled with original shots that were taken by the owner, back of album has all of the snapshots that could be bought as souvenirs cornered in with original labeling. Original photos include shots of the Royal Palace in Honolulu, the original Star Advertiser printing press from 1823, the YWCA in Honolulu with two uniformed sailors walking in front of the entrance and shots of Kahuku Point. also included are shots of native kids swimming in freshwater pools, performances of the Royal Hawaiian band, the USO in Wahiawa with Hula dancers performing, and various shots of uniformed soldiers in front of the large LDS temple in Laie. Shots of downtown Honolulu taken from the USO Victory Club roof are also featured and other shots of sugar cane fields, Koko Head, and downtown Honolulu with various flora and fauna. Shots of a man identified as Richard Papenhausen are featured showing him in full Navy uniform holding coconuts on the beach. The snapshots in the back feature famous Hawaiians including Clara Inter, known as Hilo Hattie the famed Hula performer, singer, dancer and actress, shots of outrigger canoe surfers, water buffalo, lei vendors, hula dancers, straw shacks, and other Native Hawaiian hula performers adorned with lei and piupiu grass skirts. Also featured are shots of several Navy vessels including the SS Lurline anchored next to Aloha Tower in Honolulu bay. Besides the photos in the album it also comes with more loose photos, original dated envelopes from the Kodak developer in Hawaii as well as a few pieces of original stationary and envelopes from Civilian Housing Area. These additional shots include more Navy Vessels, portraits of sailors and shots of them working on the ships, photos of waterfalls and other scenic setting throughout Oahu and the Big Island. Binding is tight and cover clean and all photos in very good condition. A wonderful snapshot in time of what pre-state Hawaii looked like through the eyes of a US Navy sailor.
