George M. Dallas (1792-1864) served as the 11th Vice President of the United States from 1845 to 1849 under President James K. Polk. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1810 and subsequently studied law. Dallas entered politics early, serving as the private secretary to Albert Gallatin, a former Treasury Secretary, and then embarked on a diplomatic career, including posts in Russia and Great Britain. Domestically, he served as the Mayor of Philadelphia (1828-1829), the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (1829-1831), and as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania (1831-1833). Dallas was also the 11th Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1833-1835). Dallas sought the White House in 1848, but after taking some controversial tie-breaking votes on tariffs while President of the Senate, he had very little popular support.
