The recipients were Harold Wilson and his wife (she a poet); Wilson at this point was leader of the Labour Party, for which Edelman was the MP for Coventry. The novel takes place against the background of the Algerian War, drawing on Edelman's intimate knowledge of the region; the juxtaposition of a 'tender love story' with which is reflected in the contrasting Mozley designs to the dustjacket's front and rear panels.
