Hamish Hamilton, 1963, FIRST EDITION, a couple of very faint spots at either end of text, pp. 282, crown 8vo, original terracotta boards, backstrip lettered in gilt, lean to spine, edges and endpapers faintly spotted, CHarles Mozley dustjacket faintly spotted and a little rubbed with very shallow chipping at extremities, very good Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: For Harold & Mary, with warm good wishes, Maurice Edelman, 1963'. The recipients were Harold Wilson and his wife (she a poet); Wilson at this point was leader of the Labour Party, for which Edelman was the MP for Coventry. The novel takes place against the background of the Algerian War, drawing on Edelman's intimate knowledge of the region; the juxtaposition of a 'tender love story' with which is reflected in the contrasting Mozley designs to the dustjacket's front and rear panels.
