Well illustrated, collates complete with 26 lithographic plates (six of which of which are double-page), another 15 full-page plates (mostly woodcuts) plus a number of smaller illustrations in the text. Many of the plates have tissue guards, including the frontis ("Whaling Scene in the California Lagoons"). The owner, whose name on a front free end paper I can't quite decipher as he gifts the book to his grandson in 1930, has added in pencil some extensive notes (on pages 71 and 269) of his own experiences, e.g. "Dr. Stillman saved my life from an attack of pneumonia in 1874 and I know him very well." and "In 1867 was in Honolulu in the first steamer to go there from S.F., the 'Ajax,' the first propeller on this coast" and "went down the Colorado River in a skiff to Port Isabel. Remember the great number of whales in the bay." Good condition, wear at head and heel of the spine and to the corners, one rubbed spot near the bottom of the spine; internally the binding is tight, mild occasional foxing including to a few of the plates.
