As an encyclopedia of expeditions to the North Pole, this work is divided into six chronological sections. Part 1 focuses on early explorers and knowledge of the Arctic from antiquity to the early 17th century, while part 2 recounts Arctic voyages from the early 17th to mid-19th century, like those of Bennet, Poole, and Fox. Part 3 describes the first Arctic expeditions of the 19th century, including Parry's voyage and Franklin’s early journeys. Part 4 is dedicated to Franklin’s last voyage and subsequent efforts to locate his crew. Part 5 deals with more recent polar expeditions, such as those led by Koldeway, Hall, and Nares. The final section describes the perilous journey of the Jeannette expedition led by George W. De Long. Includes a preface, list of authorities, table of contents, list of illustrations, and index.
