Paris, Librairie Spéciale des Arts Industriels et Décoratifs. Circa 1867 (The title page is dated 1860 but the preface refers to work by the author up until 1867). A large folio-sized portfolio of loose pages and plates as issued. Title page, 2 page preface, 3 page list of plates. These are followed by a chromolithographed title page and 60 plates depicting classical designs for wall, frieze and ceiling paintings based on styles dating from the Renaissance to the 18th century, but intended as a reference and pattern book for contemporary interior designers. The author Hippolyte Gruz was a noted Parisian painter and decorator responsible for the interiors of many of Paris most fashionable hotels in the mid-19th century. 45 of the plates are full colour chromolithographs, many heightened with gold. The remainder are coloured lithographs. Together, they comprise a stunning collection of beautifully reproduced designs. This collection of loose plates is housed in its original portfolio with a printed front cover and its 3 original ties but with a new cloth spine. Though intact and completely serviceable, the portfolio is worn around the edges of its covers and has lost around a third of the paper covering to the back cover. Title page slightly chipped at its foredge and a little dust-soiled. A couple of plates slightly chipped at their foredge. One plate with a horizontal tear across its foredge margin just extending into the ruled border of the print but not into the image itself. Occasional light dust and finger-soiling to some of the plate margins. Otherwise, a clean collection of sumptuous full colour plates housed in their original portfolio, the latter in reasonably good condition.
