Very rare press photo of four Black women who were parachute riggers for the Tuskegee Airmen on the Tuskegee Airfield during WWII. 7.5" x 9.5" black and white silver gelatin photograph. Stamp reading "Photograph by U.S. Army Air Corps", indicating that this is likely from 1941-42. Parachute riggers were trained to pack, maintain, test, and repair parachutes which would be used by paratroopers and pilots in the case of an emergency. Few riggers were certified for flight but in this remarkable image we see a women seated in a jet cockpit wearing a pilot's hat and headphones. Additionally, two of the women pictured are in jumpsuits with parachutes attached. Being a parachute rigger was one of the most impactful roles female soldiers could have during the war, as their skill in assembling and troubleshooting parachutes saved countless lives. Some corner damage, but in very good condition overall.
