Orme was a British historian of India, he joined the British East India Company in 1743, stationed in Bengal as a writer and was known for his knowledge of Indian customs. The History of the Military Transactions of the British Nation in Indostan is Orme's most well-known and successful work and draws on Orme's thoughts and writing collected across his extensive time and experiences in India. The detailed historical work was met with much critical acclaim, with a key endorsement from scholar Sir William Jones greatly increasing the works publicity. The work went through a number of editions in Orme's lifetime, each being updated and corrected, this is the Second Edition. Includes numerous folding maps (Five folding maps, two folding plans), these are generally in poor condition with tears and some loss. Includes large index. 435+xcviipp. Believed to have the original boards which have been bound onto the spine of 'the War in Coromandel' (1760, Franco-British conflict of the coast of Coromandel). Formally held in the government library in Jhansi (Utter Pradesh, India) with several stamps and a bookplate to the fixed end paper. Leather bound with rubbing to edges and joints. Spine has the title mentioned above but the title plates appear to have been removed. Marbled end papers. The pages are aged with many carrying staining and foxing.
