Tarawa: The Toughest Battle in Marine Corps History. Prepared by Staff Sergeant Dick Hannah, Marine Corps Combat Correspondent. 1944. U.S. Camera Publishing Corporation. 126 pages. Measuring 8" x 10.75". An interesting visual history of the Battle of Tarawa assembled by a Marine Corps combat correspondent, who was embedded with the unit and was able to take memorable photos of the Marines in intense firefights upon th ebeahces of the Tarawa Atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The correspondent, Staff Sergeant Hannah, provides us with a narrative straight from the battlefield, relaying the words and sentiments of the embattled Marines, as well as provide the audience a real impression of what it was like to be in a bombed out trench on the beach. Covers the sacrifice of over 1000 Marines who died to secure Betio, an important island in the archipelago, which become the highest price per square yard ever paid by the Marine Corps, in intense photographic detail. Includes interesting biographical detail on some of the personnel on the island. Some chipping and paper loss to upper spine, though interiors are exceedingly clean. Very good condition overall.
