3 volumes, complete set, French text, FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION 1778, 8vo, 210 x 125 mm, 8 x 5 inches, portrait frontispiece in Volume I by La Tour (portraitist to Louis XV), 58 engraved plates, LACKING PLATE XVI (Formosanthe surprenant Amazan couche avec une fille d'opera) facsimile illustration inserted, taken from another 1778 copy that has age-browned (see image), includes the uncovered version of the ladies being chased by monkeys, plates by Martini, Marillier, Monnet et Moreau, 13 pictorial vignette headpieces and floral tailpieces, pages: Volume 1, vi, [3], 4-304; Volume 2, viii, [3], 4-320; Volume 3, vi, [3], 4-236, followed by [3], 4-102 - L'Homme aux quarante Ecus plus Table and 3 pages of plate list (Avis Au Relieur), bound in modern half calf over earlier marbled boards, tips of corners in vellum, 2 gilt lettered labels and gilt decoration to spines. Pale offset to all title pages, some minor spotting to blank side of title page and verso of table (see image), small neat repair to top of inner margin of page 248 in Volume1, hardly noticeable, portrait foxed, pale foxing and small brown stains to all front and rear pastedowns and prelims, pale offset from engraved plates to facing pages, some pale age-browning, small stains and spots, otherwise a very good attractive set (1 plate in facsimile as noted).
