The first edition of Grant Richards"s richly illustrated guide to the French Riviera, an exceptional dedication copy inscribed to his wife, complete with the original dust wrapper. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. First edition. An exceptional dedication copy, with a signed presentation inscription from Richards to his wife at the head of the title page: "Madeline, my darling, this is your book specially, because we have been to these places together, most of them; & because we will go to the others, with my love, Grant Richards." Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and numerous monochrome ni-text illustrations by Tom Van Oss, some of which are full-page. Collated, complete. Complete with the original dust wrapper, which has been slightly trimmed but retains the publisher"s price. Grant Richards (1872-1948) was an influential British publisher and author. He founded the 'World"s Classics' series and published works by such significant writers as George Bernard Shaw, A. E. Housman and James Joyce, including the first edition of Dubliners. Browning to wraps, heavier to spine, with slight rubbing and bumping to the spine and folds, with chipping, creasing, and small areas of loss to the spine ends, corners and panel edges. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges slightly strained in places, notably between the frontispiece and title page with webbing slightly exposed, but holding. Pages generally bright and clean if slightly age toned, more so to fore edge. Author's inscription to head of title page. The odd spot of damp staining to fore edge, only extending slightly to the margins of the final few leaves, not affecting the text.
