Front cover tanned at the edges and rear cover with a couple of faint stains, modest crease at the crown and a bit of light edge creasing, very good. Inscribed on the front cover to George Bixby, proprietor of New York's Albondocani Press: "George- I thought you'd enjoy seeing this. Dana." First published in *The Hudson Review*, Vol. XXXV, No. 3, Autumn 1982. This was the same year that Gioia's nicely-printed first book was published by Kim Merker's Windhover Press, the official letterpress of The University of Iowa. Merker ran both this press and his private imprint, the Stone Wall Press; Gioia slyly (or perhaps unconsciously) notes in this essay that Merker's "editorial judgment has been as distinguished as his printing."
