Size: Frame 63 x 70 cm, print image (platemark) 49.5 x 42 cm Condition: Excellent condition, frame and mount new. This fine large print by Charles Bartlett is an etching with aquatint in colours. It is signed in pencil by the artist in the margin, titled "Shingle Street" and numbered 27/75. Shingle Street is a stretch of coastline in Suffolk, East of Ipswich. It is a wonderful area, subject to coastal erosion and changes with the wind and tide. Charles Bartlett often used such scenes close to his home as inspiration for his atmospheric watercolours and etchings. Charles Bartlett (1921-2014) (also known as Bob) PPRWS., RE., ARCA was born in Grimsby in 1921, and moved with his widowed mother to Eastbourne as a child. After schooling he went to Eastbourne School of Art, and on to the Royal College of Art. The 2nd World War interrupted his studies, and after service with the Guards Armoured Division in Germany, he took up his place at the Royal College of Art. Here Bob was much encouraged by Robert Austin, the head of the Engraving School, and later the President of both the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers, both of which societies Bob was to join, and to serve as VPRE and President of the RWS. Bob taught at Harrow Art School for ten years. He painted in oil and etched from the start; towards the end of his life watercolour became his favourite medium. He drew throughout his career. His main approach was to reinterpret landscapes using blocks of colour, as exemplified in this print, and to "get inside" the landscape. He was one of a few to use the French method of colour printing "a la poupée". He exhibited widely from 1956 until his death in 2014.
