Men, Birds & Adventure Eifert, Virgina S. (Signed) Biographies Of Environmentalists,Birds,Wildlife,Women In The Environment

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Nancy and Robert Follett, with my best wishes, Virgina S Eifert, May 26, 1964." Uncommon signed. A book dedicated to the "Illinois State Museum, which since my early childhood, has played a vital and inseparable part in my life, my interest, and my work." Her first bookBirds in Your Back Yardwas published by the Museum. Virginia Eifert went on to write seventeen more volumes on natural and cultural history though she died at only 56, and she is considered on of the most important natural history writers in Illinois history. She also wrote for many national publications likeAudubon,Natural History, andNature Magazine. This book is a series of profiles of pioneering naturalist-ornithologists and their key expeditions, including all the guys you might expect and then some: William Bartram, Lewis and Clark, Thomas Say, Alexander Wilson, Audubon, Townsend, Nuttall, Gambel, John Muir. The stories are good, but the volume is fascinating and we think highly collectible because it shows the extent to which pioneering naturalist-ornithologist women such as herself were left out of history. Here she writes women out of the history; arguably the book is evidence of light Stockholm syndrome and/or the blindness and inequalities in publishing at the time. A very good book with bumping to upper corners; in a very good jacket with wear and creasing to edges and some shallowing chipping to back panel at top.
