The Odyssey Of Homer Alexander Pope (Trans.)

18th century edition of Homer's iconic work; with Alexander Pope designated as the translator from the Greek (title page). Publisher not directly cited but the book may well have been published in Edinburgh by A. Donaldson: 'Printed by A. Donaldson, and sold at his Shop, No.48, East Corner of St. Paul's Church-yard, London, and at Edinburgh' - see image of title page. Elegant typography with lines of text numbered on the right- hand margin of each page. Again, see images but note that the tightness of the book's binding restricts what can be demonstrated. The Odyssey is followed by a parody of Homer's Iliad: The Battle of the Frogs and Mice (pp. 381 onwards). Calf-leather boards, raised bands along the spine with faded titles/gilt marking etc. Condition: the book is generally in a remarkably sound condition for a book over two and half centuries old, but please note that the front board has become completely detached from the book block. There are also some ink (browned) inscriptions/signatures on the contents page (image). Some tanning and occasional spotting - the latter mainly confined to the preliminary and final pages. pp. v, 396 + Index/18mo.
