No splits. Some minor soiling internally, but generally clean with just a few foxing spots. Many of the articles in this compilation were published in Blackwood's Magazine, but several were printed here for the first time. Of the 21 offerings, the majority deal with supernatural subjects. Notable in Volume I, is 'George Dobson's Expedition to Hell' and Sketch VII in volume II is mainly devoted to William Laidlaw of Phawhope (Will o' Phaup, Hogg's grandfather), a conspicuous drinker and fighter, and the last man in Ettrick to converse with fairies. Bleiler 837 (p.252) - several of the stories are considered 'outstanding' in the supernatural/fantasy context.
