First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author; 8vo; unmarked internally; publisher's pictorial wrappers, minor creasing close to spine, else near-fine. First edition of the author's first book, self-published after numerous rejections from commercial publishers. Although 3,000 copies were printed, only 800 were sold. However, following the highly successful eponymous film adaptation in 1991, directed by Alan Parker, it attracted a cult status in telling the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young music fanatic who assembles a group of working-class youths to form a soul band named 'The Commitments'. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half-title, 'To Ferdia, Roddy Doyle. 12/1/91.' The recipient was the Irish author Ferdia Mac Anna.
