Jules Emile Péan (1830-1898), chirurgien de l'hôpital Saint-Louis, fut l'un des chirurgiens les plus renommés de son époque, notamment en chirurgie abdomino-pelvienne. Il étonna ses confrères par sa grande dextérité et la hardiesse de ses interventions. Il réalisa la première résection gastrique, pour cancer du pylore, avec anastomose gastro-duodénale. Il fut membre de l'Académie de médecine. Cf. In the book, Deny and Exchaquet give a short history of the development of instruments for the control of hemorrhage and recount the advantages of Péan s clamp.
