[Colonial history] FINELY BOUND NEW EDITION. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.[8] 248. With 8 full-page illustrations including a frontispiece. Red full calf, gilt armorial device to upper, boards gilt-ruled. Blue label lettered in gilt, gilt tooling, and raised bands to spine. Gilt dentelles to turn-ins. Marbled endpapers, matching marbled edges. Bound by Relfe Brothers. Lightly spotted throughout, mostly to preliminaries. Ownership inscription in black ink to front blank, dated to 1908. Spine and lower board gently sunned. Very good. A product of its time - this book is a celebration of the British Empire and its efforts to colonise 'the Dark Continent,' including accounts of events such as the Anglo-Zulu War and Xhosa Wars.
