"This wonderfully detailed plan of central Paris was designed by Charles Dyonnet and published by Danlos in 1835. The inner city's twisted, narrow streets are visualized with fascinating clarity, encircled by grand boulevards located along the route of a former defensive wall. Twelve arrondissements (administrative districts) are numbered - Paris now has twenty. The footprints of numerous notable buildings are starkly outlined, while other elements like parks, plazas, and gardens are also shown and labeled. Comprehensive lists on the right and left sides name and locate a wealth of places and features, allowing the audience to "find anything from the Palais des Beaux-Arts to the neighborhood butcher", in the words of Martayan Lan. Thirty engraved scenes around the border showcase some of Paris' most iconic monuments and buildings, including the Louvre, Arce de Triomphe, Notre Dame, and Les Invalides. Less than two decades after publication, Georges-Eugène Haussmann would demolish many of the buildings around the cramped streets, bringing much-needed light and air into the city. These wide, straight avenues were also more conducive to troop movements and difficult to defend by Paris revolutionaries. Today, the layout of central Paris largely reflects Haussmann's renovations.
