"After coming to an agreement with Ecuador in 1941, the United States began construction on a secret military installation on the remote Galapagos archipelago. By 1943, the isolated Pacific base nicknamed 'The Rock' housed nearly 2,500 soldiers and civilians. It was an important refueling stop and played a critical role in the defensive ring around the Panama Canal. This piece of handmade artwork shows a WWII hospital building in the Galapagos during World War II. A large central hall and several smaller outbuildings are all prominently marked with the Red Cross. Billowing clouds and sandy beaches give a somewhat misleading, but idyllic, impression. Signed in the lower right by a member of the 401st Engineer Company, a 'Seabee' (Construction Battalion) unit that played a vital role in the establishment of airfields, temporary ports, and field hospitals across the Pacific Theater.
