First edition. Small folio. 5, [1]pp. Black and white lithographic cover by Sarony and Major bearing a portrait of a woman in a Bloomer costume. Notches along the spine and pages numbered in pencil from once being bound within an album, foxing to the exterior, offsetting throughout, very good. An instrumental piece for piano. Plate number, 1220. The Bloomer costume was first introduced in 1851 by the daughter of Congressman Gerrit Smith of New York, Elizabeth Smith Miller, and intended as a "symbol of the suffrage movement" (Springfield Museums). The editor for the feminist newspaper, *The Lily*, Amelia Jenks Bloomer, believed so strongly in the outfit that her name became synonymous with this daring new attire, which featured full pantalettes underneath a knee-length skirt. The illustration on the front cover portrays a lovely example of this short-lived, but nonetheless important piece of feminist fashion.
