Marbled boards. There is rubbing to the edges and to the leather at the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine - these also have a few small surface scrapes. The gilt lettering and raised bands on the spine are reasonably bright. Light browning to the page edges. Both volumes have the bookplate of Anthony Edwards, Life Fellow of Gonville & Caius College and retired Professor of Biometry at the University of Cambridge. This book was part of his collection of Cambridge books which was a reflection of his keen and active interest in the governance of the Collegiate University. The first volume also has the small bookplate of a previous owner at the bottom of the front pastedown and there is a price in pencil to the front free endpaper in the first volume. Heavy brown spotting to the endpapers and there is a small gap showing along the hinge at the front endpapers of the second volume. There is some browning and spotting to some of the pages but the pages are generally clean and unmarked. First printing.
