Quarto volume (20 x 28 cm). Complete with title, 13 pages of text on Turkey in Europe, and 16 fine paper guarded hand-coloured aquatint illustrations (each with a page of accompanying text). Original cloth binding, with titles lettered in gilt and blind stamped decorations. Slight even toning to pages, but generally clean. Mayer (1755-1803) was financed by the British Ambassador to Constantinople, Sir Robert Ainslie, to depict sites in the Ottoman Empire, which then included much of Palestine, Syria, Egypt, and Greece. This volume includes 16 plates, re-engraved to a reduced size, originally included in Meyer's "Views in the Ottoman Dominions" first published in 1810. Plates are from Mayer's journey in Eastern Europe along the Istrian coast of the Adriatic (present day Slovenia), through Belgrade (Serbia) and across Romania and Bulgaria to Constantinople, as well as from Syria.
