The proof does not have Randolph Churchill's introduction, but otherwise follows the published version; the jacket is identical to the published version, except it is slightly taller. The Unwritten Alliance was the last of Churchill's books published in his lifetime, gathering his increasingly sparse speeches as his political presence wound down, and is "a remarkable coda to a singular, poignant career" (Langworth, p. 337).
