Quarter plate daguerreotype. Matted with preserver in original embossed leather case with red cut velvet pad. Approximately 3.25" x 3.5". Image near fine, hinge of the case is tender, overall very good or better. Image of a seated woman tinted in gold at her neck broach, earrings, pendent, and watch, which she holds in her hands. The subject is unidentified, circa 1850. One result of the California Gold Rush, was a proliferation of daguerreotypes of women (and men) flaunting gold nugget jewelry, apparently sent to them by 49ers in the West. This is a nice example of one such image.
