"This eye-catching souvenir map showcases the architectural highlights along Europe's Rhine River between the German cities of Koblenz and Mainz. Castles, estates, and historic churches are illustrated and labeled on either bank, with the verso providing a narrative of the journey and additional details. Wine regions are also indicated - certainly areas of interest to the American soldiers who were the primary audience of the map. It was designed by the Seventh Army Special Service Recreation Section for use by troops on leave during their occupation duty in Germany. Guided tours along the Rhine (and elsewhere) were offered free of charge as a way to unwind, while also keeping some measure of control over the soldiers on leave. The text concludes, "Yesterday the Rhine separated nations. To morrow it will unite them, if only men are willing." Printed by Dr. Johannes Horning in Heidelberg in 1945 under the auspices of the Seventh Army Special Service Recreation Section."
