Folio, (lii), 626, 81, (1) pp. Portrait plates of Urry and of Chaucer, title vignette and 27 engravings in the text, being portraits of the protagonists in the Canterbury Tales, some occasional light foxing, marbled endpapers, early 19th century bookseller's label to paste down - R.C. Stanes, Chelmsford. Contemporary diced calf, edges a little worn, neatly rebacked with a black morocco label. The three "new" tales (none of which are by Chaucer) added to this edition are the Tale of Gamelyn, The Pardoner and Tapster and the Second Merchant's Tale, or Tale of Beryn. An account of what happened once the Pilgrim's reached Canterbury is also included. The first edition to be printed entirely in roman type and an important one; despite criticism of Urry's style and editing. "[It] is the first edition of Chaucer for nearly a hundred and fifty years to consult any manuscripts and is the first since that of William Thynne in 1534 to seek systematically to assemble a substantial number of manuscripts to establish his text. It is also the first edition to offer descriptions of the manuscripts of Chaucer's works." (ODNB).
