"This interesting volume was authored by J.L Campbell, Professor of Geology at Washington & Lee University, and published in New York by G.P. Putnam's Sons in 1882. Its nearly 120 pages offer a detailed overview of the mineral resources of the James River Valley in Virginia. The mountainous region was studded with deposits of coal and iron that were exploited during America's Second Industrial Revolution. The highlight of the book is a folding map in the back pocket measuring approximately 39.6" x 8.5". A Map of the Richmond & Alleghany Railroad, Showing Its Connections and Chief Mineral Resources was lithographed by August Hoen & Co. to accompany the volume. It shows the route of the aforementioned railroad, the opening of which in 1880 largely replaced the James River and Kanawha Canal from Richmond to Clifton Forge, Virginia. Various geologic strata, useful for identifying locations possibly containing ore, are colored according to the legend in the lower left. Oddly, the map is dated 1884 - two years after the publication date indicated in the book."
